Kitchen collection

My workroom career began part-time making pillows and then cushions.  I no longer often make cushions or chair pads, but made an exception for this varied set of 9, for Monica Plotka Interiors.  Shades, of course, we make week after week!
To help keep them from bowing in on the sides, we wrapped the sides back around the board about 1/2" each side.
There were 3 shades at about 31" wide:
And one was about 45" wide:
Most of the chair pads were knife-edge:
But this round one was made with 1" boxing:
In the powder room, two roman shades layered provide multiple privacy options.  Underneath, a lightweight faux silk, with an embroidered linen over.
I like the Dofix flat hem bars to help keep the bottom straight.  The first row of rings starts just 2" up because Monica prefers no "reveal" at the bottom.  I used two layers of Dofix fusible transparent buckram to keep the bottom smooth and straight without waving or wobbling.

  1. I am interested in your comment "To help keep them from bowing in on the sides, we wrapped the sides back around the board about 1/2" each side." Does this mean you cut the fabric 1/2" wider on each side? Does it taper out to the larger width? Thank you

    1. I was wondering if anyone would notice that! Yes the shade width is 1" bigger than the board, and the extra half-inch on each side wraps around as returns. The rings are uniformly aligned, not tapered; they're set in about 1.25 inch from each edge.

    2. Thank you for the reply. So you are saying the rings are still sewn in a straight column but you tapered out the side 1/2" on each side. How far down from the top of the board did you begin to taper out? Any is this successful in keeping them from bowing out?
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your blog, instructions, and pictures. I'm a home sewer(sew mostly for my kids' homes!) and with each subject you publish, I study it sooo thoroughly. Thank you for doing this!! joan

    3. Hi Joan- wow, you made my day! :) I really am thrilled that this blog is helpful for you in doing your own projects! Regarding the relaxed shades, let me clarify: for these inside mounted shades, the fabric is cut straight. Let's say the inside width is 30". The board is 29.75" wide. The entire shade is finished at 31" wide, so 1/2" of the shade is wrapped around. Nothing is actually tapered; not the fabric, and not the rings; it just might look like that because of how fabric naturally behaves. If I hadn't added that 1/2" each side, the fabric would want to bow in about half-way down- like an hourglass shape. That extra 1/2" isn't noticeable because it takes up the space where the hourglass would've been bowing in. Does that make sense? If not, I'll try to word it differently!
